London Irish go back to basics against Wasps

Glen Delaney has promised London Irish will get back to basics in their bid to avoid relegation from the Aviva Premiership.

Irish had won five of their previous six games in all competitions going into Saturday?s 40-16 defeat at Bath.

And forwards coach Delaney said: ?We did not put our best effort on the park, but what we?ve been doing since the end of December has been working for us. We have to put on the park what we have been doing in the last seven weeks.

?Wasps possess dangerous weapons in Joe Simpson, Tom Varndell and Christian Wades. They also have Billy Vunipola and Ashley Johnson to carry in the pack.

?You don?t get in the top four without being a good team. But we have fancied ourselves against the top sides and we can raise our game.?

Delaney, formerly director of rugby at Nottingham, believes there are players in the Championship that Irish should consider for next season. Exiles have been linked with Rotherham centres Fergus Mulchrone and Eamonn Sheridan.

And Delaney said: ?I would not be surprised if those two made it into Premiership clubs.

?I tried to sign Fergus Mulchrone at Nottingham two years ago when he was coming out of Sale. He looked a decent prospect back then.

?There are a lot of very good Championship players out there.

?Jon Fisher has done incredibly well. He was released by London Irish and became battle-hardened at Bedford before rejoining the club.

?There are a lot of guys in the England team who took the Championship route.

?You get players from a very tough competition, who are desperate. Economically they tend to play well above their rate.?

Irish have included Chris Hala?ufia and Ofisa Treviranus in their side to face Wasps.

Treviranus comes in at openside flanker for Jebb Sinclair who is rested. Hala?ufia has recovered from the flu, which kept him out of last weekend?s match, to be named at number 8. Sailosi Tagicakibau has recovered from a knee injury and is named as a replacement. Bryn Evans will captain the side.

London Irish director of rugby Brian Smith said: ?Wasps are a formidable team riding high in the Aviva Premiership so they?ll give us a very tough test on Sunday. In saying that we do pretty well against the top four teams at home and our boys are itching to put in a big performance for our supporters on Sunday.?

London Irish team to face London Wasps:

15. Tom Homer; 14. Topsy Ojo; 13. Guy Armitage; 12. Shane Geraghty; 11. Marland Yarde; 10. Ian Humphreys; 9. Pat Phibbs; 1. Max Lahiff; 2. Scott Lawson; 3. Halani Aulika; 4. George Skivington; 5. Bryn Evans (Captain); 6. Matt Garvey; 7. Ofisa Treviranus; 8. Chris Hala?ufia

Elan to return $1 billion to shareholders from multiple sclerosis drug sale

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish drugmaker Elan will return $1 billion to shareholders, giving them an immediate boost from the sale of its stake in multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment Tysabri to partner Biogen Idec.

Elan shares climbed over 4 percent following the announcement on Friday, which also reiterated the company's intention to make acquisitions with the rest of the $3.25 billion raised from the deal.

Tysabri was by far Elan's most important product, responsible for almost all its revenue and its sale creates uncertainty over the future shape of the company.

"Close to 40 percent of Elan's current market cap could be invested in as yet unknown assets ... we are unlikely to gain the visibility needed to become constructive on the shares until transactions are concluded," said Deutsche Bank analyst Richard Parkes.

Elan is already pursuing potential deals for the next 12-18 months, Chief Executive Kelly Martin told Reuters in an interview this month, which he said may not necessarily be restricted to the firm's past areas of activity.

"By unlocking a portion of the Tysabri asset value ... we have a unique opportunity to reward shareholders, diversify our business and create a highly distinctive business platform upon which to advance to the benefit of shareholders and patients around the world," Martin said on Friday.

Elan, which has operations in Ireland and the United States, indicated last year it would look to return some profit to shareholders from the sale of Tysabri.

The drugmaker has co-marketed Tysabri with Biogen, the larger U.S. company, for 12 years and said it would receive a royalty of 12 percent of Tysabri's global net sales for the first 12 months after the deal is completed.

For Biogen, which plans to pay for the deal using existing cash reserves, the Tysabri deal will add around $0.20 to $0.30 to 2013 earnings per share and continue to be accretive thereafter.

The deal boosts its multiple sclerosis business at a crucial time as it seeks approval for a new pill to treat the debilitating neurological disease.

Military eyes lasers to guard against IEDs

OTTAWA ? Could lasers be the answer to roadside bombs?

That?s what the Canadian Forces wants to know.

The military is looking at mounting high-powered lasers on armoured vehicles to protect soldiers from improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

The Canadian Forces would put lasers on its fleet of Cougar armoured vehicles to blast apart bombs from a safe distance.

Improvised explosive devices proved a deadly threat when Canadian troops were stationed in southern Afghanistan.

Dozens of soldiers died in IED blasts during the combat mission, which ended in 2011.

5 big US banks have cut mortgage debt by $19B

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Five of the biggest U.S. banks have cut struggling homeowners' mortgage balances by $19 billion, part of a total $45.8 billion in relief provided under a landmark settlement over foreclosure abuses.

More than 550,000 borrowers received some form of mortgage relief between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2012, according to a report issued Thursday by Joseph Smith, the monitor of the settlement.

That translates to about $82,668 per homeowner, according to the report, which is based on the banks' own accounts of their progress.

The report says $19.5 billion of the $45.8 billion in relief was in the form of short sales, in which lenders agree to accept less than what the seller owes on the mortgage.

Nigeria secret police say terror group broken up

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's secret police said Wednesday they broke up a terrorist group backed by "Iranian handlers" who wanted to assassinate a former military ruler and gather intelligence about locations frequented by Americans and Israelis.

The State Security Service, responsible for domestic spying in Africa's most populous nation, offered no details about who actually controlled and bankrolled the group. However, it said it had arrested three suspected terrorists, including the group's leader, before they could launch attacks.

The leader's "lieutenants successfully conducted surveillance and gathering relevant data ... (for) possible attacks," secret police spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said, reading from a statement. "He personally took photographs of the Israeli culture center in Ikoyi, Lagos, which he sent to his handlers."

The service identified the leader as Abdullahi Mustaphah Berende, a 50-year-old leader of a local Shiite sect in Ilorin. Ogar said Berende was arrested along with two other suspected members, while another remains at large.

Berende first traveled to Iran in 2006 and studied at an Islamic university, said Ogar. He later returned in 2011 and learned how to use Kalashnikov assault rifles and pistols, as well as making and detonating homemade explosives, she said.

Ogar identified high-level targets of the group as former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida and Ibrahim Dasuki, a former Sultan of Sokoto, a major Islamic leader in the nation. The group also conducted surveillance on USAID, the U.S. Peace Corps and other targets, she said.

Berende also received some $30,000 in cash to fund the group's planned operations.

Ogar did not take questions, nor did she elaborate on the statement. It remains unclear how close the group was to actually making any attack.

Nigeria, home to more than 160 million people, is largely divided into a Christian south and a Muslim north. Nigeria's Muslims are predominantly Sunni, though there is a Shiite community in the country. Iran has backed Shiite groups in Nigeria in the past.

Iran has previously been involved in police actions in Nigeria. In 2010, authorities at Lagos' Apapa Port found a hidden shipment of 107 mm artillery rockets, rifle rounds and other weapons from Iran. The shipment was supposedly bound for Gambia. A Nigerian and an Iranian with alleged ties to the country's Revolutionary Guard face criminal charges over the shipment.

North Korea propaganda video shows Obama, troops in flames

This transcript is automatically generated

We help our.

Sun is killing your propaganda video believed to have been posted by North Korea showing.

American troops and President Obama in flames.

Now this just days after North Korea conducted what it claims a successful nuclear test here -- parts of the new video watch -- here.

Amateur no question.

But not to be taken lightly KT McFarland -- Fox News national security analyst former deputy assistant secretary of defense during the Reagan.

Years and good morning it's my -- part of what it was set on that video is that the United States increasingly unfair bully activities.

Against North Korea a solemn warning that time is no longer on the side of the United States America should answer.

-- do you read that.

Father but they're trying to develop nuclear weapons analyst for any excuse they -- so they don't blame the United States.

But I think the scary part -- number -- -- you've got the right word amateurish we should be laughing at this right this is so amateurish and juvenile.

Young Korean leader making silly videos last week he had a music video about -- Manhattan.

The compliments.

He's -- nuclear weapon he's closer we get those closer and closer to do.

If you're not just having it but I'm mobile -- -- CIA say perhaps he has for nuclear bombs at the moment yeah we've got enough enriched uranium to probably make for a nuclear weapons what do you need for new.

You need enriched uranium -- the fuel.

You need a missile to deliberate briefed they've tested that was -- -- attest to that.

The third thing you need is a blueprint.

Which pulls it all together and that's what they're testing now.

And they dip last week so the worry is when they get nuclear weapons what then happens.

Don't think -- I wake up in the San Francisco they don't want to pick a fight with us.

A dirty fight -- what -- Seoul South Korea but south South Korea Japan will those countries decide they need to arm reed army even go nuclear.

Will North Korea sell.

Their weapons to Iran they certainly have in the past where North Korea tests a weapon is called the type the Don they sell -- to the Iranians Iranians -- -- -- call it.

Such a -- missile and then they've got the missile.

We know that the Iranians are probably of engineers in North Korea helping with the North Korean nuclear underground tests that they had last week.

So you don't just look at North Korea getting nuclear does Iran get nuclear.

Well -- let's put a fine point on this in the last two months they've tested a nuclear weapon right underground thought to be an earthquake at first later -- verified it was a nuclear test.

They also tested a multi stage rocket.

Yeah they're trying to put one on top of the other.

And join forces.

And perhaps either use that as they have weapon of propaganda.

Or -- perhaps even more nefarious than that.

Think of North -- you're absolutely right they are give you can't dismiss.

The -- incredible statements they make because they will have their hands on nuclear weapons within a short period of time.

But the big question is what are they gonna do with -- and why are they doing that.

You've said before North Korea has nothing in the world wants they don't make import they don't export anything beyond commits -- weapons.

-- the only thing they have in their starving you know I think they have to sell its weapons -- Selma.

The other thing to have -- cell is the United States because all they do is -- United States into a picture.

Can't blame the US I mean where are they as a country or where are they with propaganda without having the United States to blame and you wonder what we are doing.

To -- this or is it our duty responsibility leadership perhaps -- be Beijing.

You know what is China doing.

Well that's right and we have outsourced fat tip to China we have said look China provides 75% of North Korea's food.

Fuel oil heating fuel what the Chinese still with -- and the Chinese have not.

They may need to make a statement or to -- no North Korea shouldn't do this but -- not stopped North Korean fact we've just seen this week China's feeling so.

Emboldened that attacking and every computer in North America.

There is a statement also as the saying this from North -- as the saying goes a newborn -- knows no fear of -- tiger.

I read two things in the back -- it it's either a new leader Kim Jung on.

Or perhaps it's.

-- it's more of a statement almost as.

May be a apple -- language is say that we are the newborn poppy.

Has -- nuclear power.

That the world now has to address your -- Go either way could be the newborn puppy is the new young leader of North Korea doesn't know any fears doesn't know any bounds it could be we North Korea -- the tiger we've got the nukes.

You guys should -- us.

The problem is that this is all really heating up to -- -- in the past this is an area of the world that the Chinese have been really content to have little low boil.

They don't want it to boil over -- now threatened to board so what does China do.

That's the big question you know Beijing hasn't made a move that we know they have not made a move and that I think -- what they fear.

As much as anything is that a North Korea -- pushed too far North Korea.

If they use their leverage North Korea collapses then there are millions of North Korean refugees running across the Yellow River.

And to China causing China problems at a time when its economy is starting to slow down.

I'll tell you mentioned the issue -- out of this past week and also you know what to -- North Korea.

-- discussed -- thank you to see real soon are right.
