The Case for No New Wires - CE Pro Article from CE Pro

I recently posted a comment on an article by Julie Jacobson, ?We Need Disruptive Business Practices, Not Disruptive Technology,? in which she opined that while today we hear much about ?disruptive technologies? it is disruptive marketing and sales models that should be stimulating the marketing imaginations of electronic systems contractors.

While I believe technology is often the catalyst of new business models, as a longtime advocate of creative marketing practices I heartily agree with Julie?s premise. I responded to Julie?s position that a direct sales model could be the antidote to the woes of our industry.

My comment decried the lack of vision and or willingness to accept change among many members of the residential systems integration community. Judging by the responses to the comment, I had apparently left myself open to misinterpretation. So, let me further explain my position.

Some of the responses posted would have me relegated to the role of marketing guy. While I appreciate being perceived as such, I?d like to share a few bits of my career to help readers understand my perspective. My professional systems contracting experience began with ?custom? multiroom audio in the late ?70s (at that time ?custom? meant you built everything from scratch and you wired a network into the TV to extract audio). I?ve led or participated in the startup of three residential integration firms accounting for 20 years of my 35-year career, and during that time one highlight was selling and installing the first residential THX system in the U.S. implemented outside the LucasFilm organization. I?ve designed and installed residential control systems that were custom from the code up and overseen lighting control projects that cost more than the value of the GDP of some third-world countries.

While, true, the recent decade has seen me working from an office or plane, I know a bit about what goes on in the field.

The pretext of Julie?s article is that opportunity lies in existing sites. Julie suggests a direct sales approach, like that of Tupperware, is worthy of consideration by the systems integrator. I argued that today?s no-new-wires technologies open the door to sales opportunities previously inaccessible for retrofit and prompts the use of direct sales methods like Julie suggested. This prompted comments on the un-reliability of wireless technologies based on ?20 years of experience? and the preference for a wired infrastructure.

This assertion of the unreliability of no-new-wires technologies consistently overlooks the advancements achieved over the years and prefers to focus on the ?then? rather than ?now.? I?m not certain exactly when development of the modern-day computers began, but let?s say it was just after World War II. Work on wireless technologies certainly predates that of computers. Today we rely on computers in all aspects of life. Advances in wireless and existing wire technologies have led to huge improvements in security, quality of service and reliability. I think we can consider Wi-Fi to be a ubiquitous technology.

It?s time for systems integrators to remember our roots as pioneers. The comments offered by others seem to have missed the point of the article being sales opportunities in the retrofit of occupied, existing homes. To refuse to acknowledge the opportunity because of a misplaced adherence to an all-wired philosophy ignores the notable potential to make customers of current homeowners and renters. Whether it be done via sales parties, door-to-door sales or direct marketing, I agree with Julie it?s time to change the way we sell our goods and services.

The motivation to promote this change lies in the numbers. We need to take a quick look at history: 2005 saw the all-time high for new residential construction. The year closed with total U.S. households being 112 million, and 1.6 million (or nearly 1.5 percent) were new residences. Depending on whose numbers you believe, the market penetration of low-voltage systems was as high as 20 percent of new homes in 2005. That includes installation ranging from some Ethernet jacks to full-blown home automation systems. But for sake of conversation, let?s accept 20 percent of all new homes (or 320,000) as the market penetration number for low-voltage systems integration projects in 2005.

That means that at the peak of new home construction in the U.S. the low-voltage contracting community made its living off of less than 0.5 percent of the total market. And we did it by targeting only 1.5 percent of the market as our prospective customers.

Why? Wire!

Anyone in his or her right mind would prefer to sell a hardwired retrofit project during a boom in new construction. And even today, when the pickings are slim many would prefer to go out of business than pursue retrofit work. Of course, few, if any, informed clients would consider a hardwired retrofit today. But, were we to relieve ourselves of the need for long wire (room to room or level to level) we could easily turn that potential market of 1.5 percent of homes (not today but at its peak) into a target market of all homes. Using the most recent count of 115 million homes in 2009, capturing 20 percent of that pool of prospects would result in 23 million sales opportunities. Dwarfing the 320,000 sales made in the best year in our history - 2005.

I am not arguing no-new-wires technologies should replace wire where wire can be implemented. And I don?t suggest no-new-wires technologies are totally without fault. But considering the flagging state of our business sector, the advancements in no-new-wires technology, the market potential created when we shed our dependence on wire and the demands of the consumer for wireless technologies, one has to see a very real opportunity.

Would you rather stand by and watch someone else take advantage? Or are you open to change and an opportunity for real business?

Ex-ace Lincecum gives Giants stellar relief

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:05 a.m. ET Oct. 28, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Banished to the bullpen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner has become baseball's most distinguished middle reliever.

His dark, stringy hair flopping onto his shoulders, Tim Lincecum was the ace of the staff when the Giants won the World Series two years ago for the first time since 1954.

Following his surprising season-long slump, San Francisco dropped Lincecum from its World Series rotation. Given the chance to pitch in relief, he's thrown 4 2-3 hitless innings against the Detroit Tigers and helped the Giants to a 3-0 lead with another outstanding outing in Saturday night's 2-0 win.

"The second we got that ring, it's like that taste for that next ring is just sitting right in your mouth the whole time," Lincecum said before stopping himself. "That sounds terrible. Let me rephrase that. It just leaves you wanting it even more, and if that means being a good teammate or being in the bullpen, I really don't care. I just want to win."

Lincecum has faced 16 batters and struck out eight in the World Series. The only two Tigers to reach base were on a two-out walk and an error by shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Lincecum has tied Ron Taylor of the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals for most innings by a pitcher who didn't allow a hit in a single World Series, according to STATS LLC.

Not bad given that Lincecum calls himself "a safety-net kind of thing."

"He has relished the role. That's the biggest part of it, is he accepted it and really acted like he looked forward to helping the club in that role, and that's why I think he's having success," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He didn't waver on going to the bullpen. He said, `Yeah, I'd love to go there and help this team move forward."'

Known for his high leg kick and unorthodox delivery, the diminutive right-hander has simplified his mechanics during the postseason, jettisoning his windup and going solely from the stretch - even with no runners on base.

"It allows me to just think about one thing, and that's sight of the target," he said. "At times it can still get away for me and I can still think about the wrong things. But most of the times it works."

After winning the NL Cy Young Award in 2009 and `10, Lincecum slumped to 13-14 in 2011 and 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA this year, the highest among qualifying NL starters.

But Bochy had a hunch about Lincecum, because of "how quick he gets loose and also how resilient he is."

"We expected it because the manager has a knack for using guys where they can do damage to stop innings," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

The 28-year-old Lincecum gave up four runs and lost his only postseason start, in Game 4 of the NL championship series against St. Louis, but he's allowed just one run and three hits in 13 innings of relief over five outings. He's struck out 17 coming out of the bullpen, with a 0.69 ERA.

"That's obviously a pretty nice weapon for them," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Out in the bullpen, Lincecum gets to sit alongside bearded closer Sergio Romo, part of a colorful relief corps that's known for being loosey-goosey.

"He's got the long, wacky hair on the top of his head and not in his face," Romo said. "He definitely does fit in."

US Supreme Court upholds stay of execution in Fla.

(AP) ? Following a slew of conflicting court rulings, a federal appeals court has blocked the scheduled execution of a mass killer convicted of eight killings that jolted South Florida in the 1970s. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the stay.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' decision Tuesday came during a flurry of legal decisions over claims that 64-year-old John Errol Ferguson suffers from mental illness so severe he cannot be executed. Ferguson, a paranoid schizophrenic with delusions he's the "prince of God," had faced a planned lethal injection at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Florida's death chamber.

The Supreme Court rejected an earlier Ferguson emergency appeal Tuesday ? as did the 11th Circuit ? but the high court would not agree to the state of Florida's request to overturn the later ruling. The appeals court set a schedule for motions that will likely delay the execution at least until the first week of November, if not longer.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's office argued in court papers that the late ruling "makes a mockery of the state's compelling interest in finality" in Ferguson's case. He has been on death row for 34 years.

In Washington, the nation's high court noted that Chief Justice John Roberts took no part in the case. There was no further explanation.

Ferguson was convicted of shooting eight bound and blindfolded people execution-style in South Florida in 1977, then killing a teenage couple months later in 1978 after they left a church event planning to get some ice cream. He has previously been ruled mentally competent to be executed, and over recent days, federal judges in Florida, Georgia and Washington have wrestled with his appeals over that issue.

The execution was scheduled after the Florida Supreme Court this month upheld a lower court ruling based on testimony by a panel of psychiatrists appointed by Gov. Rick Scott. The state justices wrote that "Ferguson understands what is taking place and why."

The latest ruling from the federal appeals court said it would explore whether the Florida Supreme Court's decision was an "unreasonable determination of the facts" based on Ferguson's documented history of mental illness.

His lawyers have argued that Ferguson lacks rational understanding, because he suffers from delusions that he's the "prince of God" and that God is preparing him to return to Earth after his execution to save the United States from a communist plot.

Ferguson was convicted of two sets of murders and is suspected in a third.

In 1977, Ferguson and two accomplices fatally shot six people at a Carol City home, then the worst mass slaying in Miami-Dade County history. Even more shocking was Ferguson's murder of a teenage couple who had left a church event in Hialeah in 1978 and never met up with friends they planned to meet.

In the 1977 case, Ferguson pretended to be an electric utility worker to gain access to the Carol City house, which police said was a local hangout for marijuana dealers whom the bandits wanted to rob of drugs and cash. Former Miami-Dade prosecutor David Waksman said most of the victims were friends who happened to drop by the house while Ferguson and the other men were there. The victims were blindfolded and bound, but the encounter turned violent after a mask worn by one of Ferguson's gang fell off and his face was spotted by a victim.

The decision was made to kill all eight people in the house, said Waksman, now a legal adviser to a local police department. They were shot one by one. Two managed to survive.

Almost six months later, passers-by spotted the bodies of Brian Glenfeldt and Belinda Worley, both 17, who had both been fatally shot. Worley also had been raped. Her jewelry was missing along with cash from Glenfeldt's wallet.

Trial testimony showed the couple had stopped at a romantic "lovers' lane" when they were approached by Ferguson, dressed as a police officer. Ferguson shot Glenfeldt in the car and Worley tried to flee but was caught.

The randomness of the crime and the youth of the two victims stunned many in Miami, then a slower-paced place that was yet to become the infamous "cocaine cowboys" murder capital of the 1980s. Ferguson confessed to killing "the two kids" after he was arrested in April 1978 for the earlier killings, court records show.

Worley's mother, Edna Worley, waited for decades for Ferguson's execution and often said "if she could, she would pull the switch," her son and Belinda's brother, Michael Worley, told The Miami Herald. He didn't return telephone calls from The Associated Press.

Edna Worley died in May, her son said. "She planned on attending the execution. She wanted to be there for her daughter."

Ferguson was sentenced to die in both cases; he unsuccessfully used the insanity defense in the trial over the teenagers' murders. Waksman said the gun he used was also traced to the killings of an elderly couple slain outside a Miami motel, but he was never charged with that crime because there was no other corroborating evidence.

The two accomplices in the 1977 slayings, Beauford White and Marvin Francois, were found guilty in separate murder trials and were executed in the 1980s. A third man, who stayed in the car the entire time, pleaded guilty to lesser charges and testified against Ferguson and the other two.

It's been 34 years since Ferguson was first sentenced to die. That is longer than many on death row but by no means the record in Florida. Corrections Department records show several inmates have been on death row since the early 1970s and one first got there in 1967.

San Francisco?s Spectacular Hypocrisy

Hetch Hetchy Valley as it appeared before it was transformed into a reservoir, in Yosemite National Park, California Hetch Hetchy Valley as it appeared before it was transformed into a reservoir, in Yosemite National Park, California

Photo by Isaiah West Taber/Wikimedia Commons.

In San Francisco, concern for the environment is a dearly held civic virtue. The Sierra Club was founded here 120 years ago; San Francisco?s mayor issued the first Earth Day proclamation in 1970; and, more recently, San Franciscans have embraced everything from organic food and compostable plastics to hybrid cars and bike lanes. But the green city has a dark secret.

For the better part of a century, San Francisco has stored its tap water 180 miles away, in the heart of Yosemite National Park. The Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which holds 117 billion gallons of water behind a 312-foot dam, drowned a glacial valley that early conservationist John Muir described as ?one of Nature's rarest and most precious mountain mansions.? The reservoir has been a sore spot with environmentalists for decades.

On Election Day, the city will vote on whether to take the first step toward draining Hetch Hetchy and restoring the valley. A controversial ballot initiative introduced by a single-issue spin-off of the Sierra Club, called Restore Hetch Hetchy, would force the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to spend $8 million?less than 1 percent of the agency?s annual budget?to study alternatives to the city?s current water system. The ultimate goal is a second ballot initiative, in 2016, that would let voters decide whether to drain the reservoir. In a state as arid as California, giving up water storage is a perilous proposition, but polling earlier this year showed the measure has an even chance among San Francisco voters.

City leaders are a different story.

Local officials are usually open to ambitious, well-intentioned proposals. This is the city, after all, that is fighting childhood obesity by banning Happy Meal toys. San Francisco forbids plastic bags at retail stores; it has tried to place cancer warnings on cellphones; and it has had its own local version of universal health care since 2007. Public nudity is considered a form of free expression.

But considering an alternative to the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir seems to be too outrageous for San Francisco. City Hall, local representatives, business groups, and newspapers have lined up against the proposal, calling it ?stupid? and a costly boondoggle. They warn that draining Hetch Hetchy could destroy the Bay Area as we know it.

?As insane as this is, it is, in fact, insane,? sputtered the usually mild-mannered Mayor Ed Lee when the initiative was announced.

But the idea is not crazy. And refusing to discuss it shows a stubborn lack of foresight.

Muir and other early conservationists considered the Hetch Hetchy Valley the ?exact counterpart? of the majestic Yosemite Valley, which is the site of El Capitan and Half Dome. But the Hetch Hetchy Valley?s high granite walls made it an attractive spot for a reservoir. San Francisco lobbied Congress for permission to dam the valley for years and finally succeeded in 1913?in part by capitalizing on sympathy for victims of the 1906 earthquake. Along with rights to the water, the city won a perpetual lease on the land. The decision was controversial then?200 newspapers around the country published screeds against it?but the O?Shaughnessy Dam went up across the Tuolumne River anyway, and the first water was delivered in 1934. Today, Hetch Hetchy is the largest of San Francisco?s eight reservoirs, storing water for the city and other municipalities across the Bay Area.

The gravity-powered system that carries Tuolomne River water from Hetch Hetchy to San Francisco, across two-thirds the width of the state, is a marvel of engineering. But it?s also an artifact of the early 20th century, an era when taming nature was a national obsession and rapidly growing California municipalities fought over water resources. Los Angeles took its desperate hunt for water all the way to the Owens Valley, more than 200 miles away, famously using subterfuge to acquire water rights from hapless farmers. By setting its sights on Hetch Hetchy, San Francisco was able to remain above such sordid tactics. But over the years, the smug city has come to see the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir not just as a savvy acquisition but as a ?birthright,? to quote former mayor Dianne Feinstein.

Syrian warplanes strike rebel-held town in north

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes on Tuesday struck a strategic rebel-held town in the country's north in an attempt to reopen a key supply route, activists said, as a U.N.-proposed cease-fire meant to start this week appeared increasingly unlikely to take hold.

The U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria has suggested that both sides in Syria's 19-month-old conflict lay down their arms during Eid al-Adha, a four-day Muslim holiday that begins Friday. However, neither Syrian President Bashar Assad nor rebels fighting to topple him have committed to a truce, and international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has not said how such a truce would be monitored.

Syria's stalemated civil war, which has frequently spilled over Syria's borders and threatens to destabilize an already volatile region, featured prominently in the final pre-election debate Monday in the U.S. between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney,

Both men said they would not send American troops to Syria, but Romney pledged to help arm rebels after vetting the intended recipients, earning him praise from Syrian opposition leaders. Obama warned of the risk of giving the rebels heavy weapons that could fall into the wrong hands and later be used against the U.S. or its allies.

"By not arming the (rebel) Free Syrian Army with heavy weapons, he (Obama) is giving Assad the upper hand," said Muhieddine Lathkani, a member of the Syrian National Council, an umbrella of opposition groups.

The rebels have said they need heavier weapons to counter Assad's military superiority, particular from the air. Since the summer, the regime has increasingly pounded rebel positions with warplanes and helicopter gunships.

On Tuesday, government aircraft attacked Maaret al-Numan and the village of Mar Shamsheh, as troops and rebels battled over a nearby Syrian military camp that has been under siege for days, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The activist group reported more than two dozen casualties among the rebels, but did not have the breakdown of killed and wounded.

Opposition fighters seized Maaret al-Numan, which lies along the main highway between Aleppo and Damascus, earlier this month. Their presence has disrupted the regime's ability to send supplies and reinforcements to the northwest. This has hampered the government's fight in Aleppo, where troops are bogged down in a bloody fight for control of the country's largest city.

Amateur video posted Monday showed rebel fighters unleashing heavy bursts of machine-gun fire, apparently at a convoy heading to the besieged army camp. Syria restricts access to foreign reporters and the authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

An international human rights group, meanwhile, said the Syrian air force stepped up attacks with cluster bombs in the past two weeks, dropping more over a wider area, despite Damascus' denials that it has used the widely banned munitions.

Cluster bombs open in flight, scattering smaller bomblets over a wide area. Many of the bomblets don't explode immediately, posing a threat to civilians long afterward.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch, citing amateur videos and interviews with victims, residents and activists, said it has received new information about more than 35 sites where cluster bombs were dropped.

The violence in Syria has killed more than 34,000 people, said Observatory chief Rami Abdul-Rahman, whose group relies on a network of activists on the ground. This figure includes civilians and rebel fighters, but also more than 8,000 regime soldiers, he said.

Abdul-Rahman said there were no signs on inside Syria that rebels or government troops were preparing to halt fighting during Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Abdelbaset Sieda, the head of the Syrian National Council, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that rebel fighters are willing to halt fighting during the holiday, but will respond if attacked. He said he doubts the regime will honor the cease-fire and that Brahimi's plan is too vague.

"Brahimi hasn't any mechanism to observe the situation," Sieda said by phone from Stockholm, Sweden. "Now he is saying every side can do that (halt fighting) by itself."

In Damascus, Syria's deputy foreign minister, Faisal Mekdad, said the Assad regime is cooperating with Brahimi. "We are always optimistic," he said when asked about the chances of a cease-fire.

However, Brahimi said after a visit to Damascus on Sunday that he did not get a commitment to the truce from the regime.

The relentless fighting in Syria has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country to escape the violence.

The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that Lebanon has become the third Syrian neighbor to host more than 100,000 refugees from Syria's civil war.

At least 101,283 people have registered as refugees in Lebanon, said agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming. This compares to more than 105,000 in Jordan, at least 101,000 in Turkey, more than 42,000 in Iraq and 6,800 in North Africa.

Governments bordering Syria estimate tens of thousands more Syrian refugees have not yet registered, including an estimated 70,000 in Turkey who live outside refugee camps, she said.

Jordan alone says it hosting some 210,000 Syrian refugees, which Amman says has strained the country's health care, water and electricity sectors.

Green energy would save EU trillions by 2050: report

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A green revolution to make EU energy almost totally carbon-free by 2050 would generate 3 trillion euros ($3.9 trillion) in fuel savings, a report commissioned by environmental campaigners said.

The energy shift would already create around half a million extra jobs by 2020, researchers from German aerospace center DLR, which also specializes in energy and transport, found.

The European Union has legislated to ensure that 20 percent of the energy mix is green by 2020, as part of a set of three main environmental goals.

But it has yet to achieve agreement on binding targets beyond 2020, even though non-binding roadmaps have laid out the need for a virtually carbon-free electricity mix by 2050.

Commissioned by Greenpeace and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), the 2012 Energyevolution report lays out steps towards almost carbon-free energy. They include curbing energy demand through greater efficiency, increasing investment in wind and solar power and phasing out subsidies for carbon-intensive energy, such as coal.

To bring about the energy transformation, it sees a need to invest about 99 billion euros between now and 2050, but it says the financial gains are much greater.

"Because renewable energy has no fuel costs, the fuel cost savings in the Energyevolution scenario reach a total of 3,010 billion euros up to 2050, or 75 billion per year," the report said.

Another benefit is job-creation. The report finds almost totally green energy would lead to half a million extra jobs compared with business as usual, as renewable energy initially demands more workers than carrying on with fossil fuel.

POLITICAL WILL

The energy revolution requires political will and the report calls on the European Union to agree new targets beyond the 2020 goals to cut carbon by 20 percent, improve energy efficiency by 20 percent and to draw 20 percent of energy from green sources.

"A continuation of the successful triple targets for 2030 will provide industry certainty, mobilize investment in renewable and energy saving technologies and secure the necessary climate ambition," the report says.

European Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard has repeatedly stated her belief in targets as the way to bring about change, but member states have been haggling over whether there should be another set of three goals, as opposed to just a carbon cutting goal or even no binding targets at all.

The report urges a binding goal of 45 percent renewable energy by 2030 and also wants to raise the 2020 ambitions to introduce a binding 30 percent carbon cut rather than the existing 20 percent cut.

"The expert consensus is that a fundamental shift in the way we consume and generate energy must begin immediately and be well under way within the next 10 years in order to avert the worst impacts of climate change," the report said.

"Each year we emit almost 30 billion metric tons (33 billion tons) of carbon equivalent," the report said further. "We are literally filling up the sky." ($1 = 0.7674 euros)

If you suffer from diabetes, you may be concerned about the long-term implications of the disease, how your condition will change over the years, bringing with it new side-effects, and what you can do to keep yourself as healthy as possible. Here at Gnet, we are always looking for new health products and techniques to help you. Follow our guide on how to manage your diabetes in a natural and safe way!

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that is caused by reduced levels of insulin in the body, which result in blood sugar levels being regulated extremely inefficiently. Insulin is a hormone in the body that is released after eating; this is when the blood sugar level is high. Insulin works by pulling sugars out of the blood and converting it for storage by the body, until it is needed as fuel.

There are several different types of diabetes, but the most common are Types-1 and 2. In Type-1 diabetes, the body simply does not produce enough insulin. This is generally an inherited condition that will worsen over life, but is controlled through insulin-injections, and by controlling blood sugar levels through constant monitoring.
Type-2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes (accounting for almost 90% of all cases!) and is much more a result of lifestyle. Those who are obese and exist on a poor diet, rich in sugars and fat, are at a much greater risk of developing it. In Type-2 diabetes, the body stops responding so well to the release of insulin, sometimes even resulting in a complete resistance to it. This is often coupled with a reduced production of insulin by the body itself.

The resulting erratic sugar levels in both types of diabetes are the source of the problems that the disease produces, and can be extremely dangerous if not controlled properly.
We must stress that is you suffer from symptoms that you suspect to be diabetic, you must visit your doctor immediately. These symptoms can include increased thirst, a frequent need to urinate, weight loss, and fatigue.

However, if you knowingly suffer from diabetes, and are being monitored and medicated by your doctor, then this simple guide to living more healthily and managing your disease naturally is for you!

Exercise More! This is vital for us all, but especially important if you suffer from Type-2 Diabetes. Your condition can be improved dramatically if you lose a bit of weight- your blood sugar levels will stabilize, and less strain will be put on your heart; this is particularly important since those with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer heart disease later in life. Studies show that short bursts of high-intensity exercise are the most effective at improving the effects of type-2 diabetes.

  1. Quit Smoking!
Again, this will obviously improve your health generally, but it will also protect your heart. The focus of smoking is usually on the damage to your lungs, but it is incredibly damaging to your heart too. Since diabetes puts your heart at a higher risk, take every measure you can to look after it!
  1. Supplement your Diet!
It?s important that you keep your diet varied, and full of the vitamins and minerals you need to support your body, and help it manage diabetes as well as it can. In particular, there are supplements specially designed with diabetes-sufferers in mind, which contain high levels of chromium. Studies suggest that chromium improves the body?s sensitivity to insulin, which could dramatically reduce diabetic symptoms. The supplement that we are particularly interested in is http://www.optimumdiabetics.com, since it also contains Evening Primrose oil; research is starting to show that evening primrose oil may have a healing effect on any nerve damage caused by diabetes. In addition, it contains alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant that is believed to lower blood sugar levels. Talk to your doctor about how this supplement might really benefit you and your condition.
  1. Eat More Cinnamon!
There is real evidence to show that cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels, and improve insulin-production in the body. Try adding half a teaspoon to your cereal in the morning, for a great taste and even better health benefits! Be careful though- make sure you buy real cinnamon; a lot of cheap cinnamon sold is actually a relative of the spice called Cassia, which, in large doses, is toxic! So be sure to check before you buy!
  1. Eat Low GI Foods!
There are foods that are broken down very quickly into sugars, and cause your blood sugar levels to rocket; these are things like pasta, white bread, white rice, and they are called High GI foods. Other foods are broken down more slowly, and sugars are fed into the bloodstream in a more stable manner; these are low GI foods, and these are the foods you should eat more of if you suffer from diabetes. This will help your body deal with sugars more easily, since it won?t be overloaded with the peaks and troughs of sugars that high GI foods cause. Pack more broccoli, lentils, cabbage, beetroots, beans and whole grains into your diet.

Grandmas made humans live longer: Chimp lifespan evolves into human longevity, computer simulation shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Computer simulations provide new mathematical support for the "grandmother hypothesis" -- a famous theory that humans evolved longer adult lifespans than apes because grandmothers helped feed their grandchildren.

"Grandmothering was the initial step toward making us who we are," says Kristen Hawkes, a distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of Utah and senior author of the new study published Oct. 24 by the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The simulations indicate that with only a little bit of grandmothering -- and without any assumptions about human brain size -- animals with chimpanzee lifespans evolve in less than 60,000 years so they have a human lifespan. Female chimps rarely live past child-bearing years, usually into their 30s and sometimes their 40s. Human females often live decades past their child-bearing years.

The findings showed that from the time adulthood is reached, the simulated creatures lived another 25 years like chimps, yet after 24,000 to 60,000 years of grandmothers caring for grandchildren, the creatures who reached adulthood lived another 49 years -- as do human hunter-gatherers.

The grandmother hypothesis says that when grandmothers help feed their grandchildren after weaning, their daughters can produce more children at shorter intervals; the children become younger at weaning but older when they first can feed themselves and when they reach adulthood; and women end up with postmenopausal lifespans just like ours.

By allowing their daughters to have more children, a few ancestral females who lived long enough to become grandmothers passed their longevity genes to more descendants, who had longer adult lifespans as a result.

Hawkes conducted the new study with first author and mathematical biologist Peter Kim, a former University of Utah postdoctoral researcher now on the University of Sydney faculty, and James Coxworth, a University of Utah doctoral student in anthropology. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Australian Research Council.

How Grandmothering Came to Be

Hawkes, University of Utah anthropologist James O'Connell and UCLA anthropologist Nicholas Blurton Jones formally proposed the grandmother hypothesis in 1997, and it has been debated ever since. Once major criticism was that it lacked a mathematical underpinning -- something the new study sought to provide.

The hypothesis stemmed from observations by Hawkes and O'Connell in the 1980s when they lived with Tanzania's Hazda hunter-gatherer people and watched older women spend their days collecting tubers and other foods for their grandchildren. Except for humans, all other primates and mammals collect their own food after weaning.

But as human ancestors evolved in Africa during the past 2 million years, the environment changed, growing drier with more open grasslands and fewer forests -- forests where newly weaned infants could collect and eat fleshy fruits on their own.

"So moms had two choices," Hawkes says. "They could either follow the retreating forests, where foods were available that weaned infants could collect, or continue to feed the kids after the kids are weaned. That is a problem for mothers because it means you can't have the next kid while you are occupied with this one."

That opened a window for the few females whose childbearing years were ending -- grandmothers -- to step in and help, digging up potato-like tubers and cracking hard-shelled nuts in the increasingly arid environment. Those are tasks newly weaned apes and human ancestors couldn't handle as infants.

The primates who stayed near food sources that newly weaned offspring could collect "are our great ape cousins," says Hawkes. "The ones that began to exploit resources little kids couldn't handle, opened this window for grandmothering and eventually evolved into humans."

Evidence that grandmothering increases grandchildren's survival is seen in 19th and 20th century Europeans and Canadians, and in Hazda and some other African people.

But it is possible that the benefits grandmothers provide to their grandchildren might be the result of long postmenopausal lifespans that evolved for other reasons, so the new study set out to determine if grandmothering alone could result in the evolution of ape-like life histories into long postmenopausal lifespans seen in humans.

Simulating the Evolution of Adult Lifespan

The new study isn't the first to attempt to model or simulate the grandmother effect. A 1998 study by Hawkes and colleagues took a simpler approach, showing that grandmothering accounts for differences between humans and modern apes in life-history events such as age at weaning, age at adulthood and longevity.

A recent simulation by other researchers said there were too few females living past their fertile years for grandmothering to affect lifespan in human ancestors. The new study grew from Hawkes' skepticism about that finding.

Unlike Hawkes' 1998 study, the new study simulated evolution over time, asking, "If you start with a life history like the one we see in great apes -- and then you add grandmothering, what happens?" Hawkes says.

The simulations measured the change in adult longevity -- the average lifespan from the time adulthood begins. Chimps that reach adulthood (age 13) live an average of another 15 or 16 years. People in developed nations who reach adulthood (at about age 19) live an average of another 60 years or so -- to the late 70s or low 80s.

The extension of adult lifespan in the new study involves evolution in prehistoric time; increasing lifespans in recent centuries have been attributed largely to clean water, sewer systems and other public health measures.

The researchers were conservative, making the grandmother effect "weak" by assuming that a woman couldn't be a grandmother until age 45 or after age 75, that she couldn't care for a child until age 2, and that she could care only for one child and that it could be any child, not just her daughter's child.

Based on earlier research, the simulation assumed that any newborn had a 5 percent chance of a gene mutation that could lead to either a shorter or a longer lifespan.

The simulation begins with only 1 percent of women living to grandmother age and able to care for grandchildren, but by the end of the 24,000 to 60,000 simulated years, the results are similar to those seen in human hunter-gatherer populations: about 43 percent of adult women are grandmothers.

The new study found that from adulthood, additional years of life doubled from 25 years to 49 years over the simulated 24,000 to 60,000 years.

The difference in how fast the doubling occurred depends on different assumptions about how much a longer lifespan costs males: Living longer means males must put more energy and metabolism into maintaining their bodies longer, so they put less vigor into competing with other males over females during young adulthood. The simulation tested three different degrees to which males are competitive in reproducing.

What Came First: Bigger Brains or Grandmothering?

The competing "hunting hypothesis" holds that as resources dried up for human ancestors in Africa, hunting became better than foraging for finding food, and that led to natural selection for bigger brains capable of learning better hunting methods and clever use of hunting weapons. Women formed "pair bonds" with men who brought home meat.

Many anthropologists argue that increasing brain size in our ape-like ancestors was the major factor in humans developing lifespans different from apes. But the new computer simulation ignored brain size, hunting and pair bonding, and showed that even a weak grandmother effect can make the simulated creatures evolve from chimp-like longevity to human longevity.

So Hawkes believes the shift to longer adult lifespan caused by grandmothering "is what underlies subsequent important changes in human evolution, including increasing brain size."

"If you are a chimpanzee, gorilla or orangutan baby, your mom is thinking about nothing but you," she says. "But if you are a human baby, your mom has other kids she is worrying about, and that means now there is selection on you -- which was not on any other apes -- to much more actively engage her: 'Mom! Pay attention to me!'"

"Grandmothering gave us the kind of upbringing that made us more dependent on each other socially and prone to engage each other's attention," she adds.

That, says Hawkes, gave rise to "a whole array of social capacities that are then the foundation for the evolution of other distinctly human traits, including pair bonding, bigger brains, learning new skills and our tendency for cooperation."

Russian opposition elects its leaders online

MOSCOW (AP) ? President Vladimir Putin has had nothing but mockery for the protesters who have taken to the streets against him in unprecedented numbers. Russia's opposition, he said, is no more than a gaggle of Internet dwellers with "no unified program, no clear and comprehensible way of achieving their unclear goals, and nobody who can actually do something."

The opposition has set out to prove him wrong by formally choosing its leaders through an online election that ended Monday night. Nearly 82,000 voted in the election, which was intended to help the opposition present a more united front against the Kremlin and find a way to broaden its appeal as enthusiasm for streets protests fades.

Alexei Navalny, a charismatic corruption fighter who is a rock star among the protest leaders, won the most votes, confirming his leadership role among the diverse collection of liberals, leftists and nationalists who make up the anti-Putin opposition.

The elections will clarify "which people, which methods and which ideology have the most support," Navalny said in an interview.

Navalny and his supporters dominated a three-week series of debates among the candidates, a process some of his rivals derided as his "coronation."

Navalny won nearly 44,000 votes in the election, while a sharp-tongued, larger-than-life poet, novelist and columnist Dmitry Bykov came second followed by Garry Kasparov, a former world chess champion turned opposition leader. Ksenia Sobchak, a glamorous TV host who became a face of Moscow protests, also made a strong performance, finishing fourth with more than 32,000 votes.

Throughout the weekend, thousands of Russians, many of them middle-aged or older, stood in long lines on a central Moscow square to register to vote. Those with better Internet skills registered online. They had to prove their identity either by transferring a token amount, under the equivalent of 50 cents, from their bank account or sending a photograph of themselves holding their passport.

Despite a heavy police presence and occasional visits from pro-Kremlin activists, the event was peaceful and festive, with classic Russian rock songs playing over speakers. The voting was supposed to end Sunday night, but was extended for a day after a barrage of hacker attacks took down the servers for most of Saturday.

Pressure on the opposition has increased since Putin began his third term as president in May. Protest leaders have come under criminal investigation, been called in for questioning and had their homes and offices searched.

This weekend, a leftist activist accused Russian security officers of kidnapping him in Ukraine and bringing him back to Russia, where he said he was tortured into confessing to organizing riots. Investigators said Monday that the activist, Leonid Razvozzhayev, had turned himself in. He is associated with leftist opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov, who is under investigation in the same case.

Also Monday, two members of the Pussy Riot punk band were transferred from a Moscow jail to remote prison colonies, their lawyer said. Earlier this month, an appeals court upheld the two-year prison sentences handed to Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova for an irreverent anti-Putin protest in Moscow's main cathedral in February. The court released a third member of the group by suspending her sentence.

Moscow has been the epicenter of the protest movement, which brought tens of thousands onto the streets for a series of rallies during the winter and spring, and nearly all of the favorites in the opposition election live in the capital. Nevertheless, the election indicates that the protest movement has wide support nationwide, with more than half of the registered voters living outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

More than 200 people ran for seats on the 45-member Coordinating Council. Voters were able to choose up to 30 candidates from a general list and up to five from each of three separate lists of liberals, leftists and nationalists.

Nikolai Petrov, an analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center, said the opposition has done well simply to get this far. "They started very positive and serious discussions about what protesters should do," he said. "If they can have fair elections a week after unfair federal elections, that's an achievement in itself."

The challenge for the Coordinating Council will be to tap into anti-Putin sentiment across the country. Many Russians express discontent with Putin's rule but say they see no viable alternative.

Leonid Volkov, an activist who organized the election, said the opposition could use the know-how to vote on other issues in the future. "We have got a mechanism for honest and transparent election on the Internet, and we will maintain it," he said.

With few exceptions, opposition figures skipped the elections this month for governors, mayors and regional legislatures across the country, allowing the Kremlin party to sweep the board. Some within the opposition derided the decision to focus instead on electing the Coordinating Council, saying it distracted attention from what should have been real electoral work.

ADORA's Box: FILIPINO STYLE SPAGHETTI

Spaghetti, though an everyday food, brings fond memories of special occasions. Every birthday party probably has spaghetti as one of the dishes served. For me, spaghetti brings to mind Christmas. We always serve spaghetti for Christmas brunch. All the children (as well as the adults) look forward to spaghetti. If we are lucky enough to have leftovers, we look forward to eating pan fried spaghetti for breakfast the next day. The pasta with sauce is heated in a pan with a touch of oil. The spaghetti becomes dry and caramelized with toasty bits of meat and cheese. Super delicious!

The Kulinarya Cooking Club's theme for this month is Filipino style spaghetti. This may seem uncharacteristically Filipino as we all know that pasta is not our native ingredient. Pasta, however, is as much loved as rice and noodles. It is popular at parties and for everyday meals. It is served at both restaurants and roadside stalls. It is a must have on the menu. Philippine McDonald's serves spaghetti and rice dishes to cater to our palates (and also to rival the more popular Filipino fastfood chain Jollibee).

There is nothing special about Filipino spaghetti yet it is nothing like the Italian spaghetti. It is a recipe created with the Filipino palate in mind so it is perfect for our liking. It is not unlike the other tomato based Filipino dishes. All the ingredients that Filipinos love are thrown in: hot dogs, sweet pickles, banana catsup, fish sauce and cheese. The key is to saute the ingredients well to create caramelization before adding in the wet ingredients. A long simmer boils away the acidity of the tomato sauce and produces a rich sweet sauce. We prefer pasta a little bit past al dente. The sauce is usually mixed in before serving. I like mixing the pasta with a small amount of sauce then topping with more sauce. Sprinkled freely with cheese, a dash of Tabasco and eaten with bread makes it a meal to die for.?

This recipe will make 12-20 servings.

Ingredients for the spaghetti sauce:

2 tbsps. olive oil plus 1 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. crushed garlic
2 c. chopped onions
500 gms. minced beef
500 gms. minced pork
1/2 tsp. dried mixed herbs
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1/4 c. tomato puree (tomato paste)
2 1/2 c. passata (pureed tomatoes) or tomato sauce?
1/4 c. tomato or banana catsup
1 tsp. (or more) hot sauce (such as Tabasco)
6 frankfurters (or regular hot dogs), quartered lengthwise then diced
3 c. stock
3 tbsps. fish sauce
3 tbsps. sweet pickle relish
2 tbsps. brown sugar
1/2 c. grated processed cheese
1 tsp. salt (or to taste)

Method:

Heat up a big casserole or pot. Add the olive oil and butter. Add in the garlic when the butter has melted.?Saut??until the garlic starts to?colour. Add in the chopped onions and salt. Stir, then cover and lower the heat. Leave this to soften for about 10 minutes.?

Add in the minced beef, minced pork, herbs, ground black pepper and tomato?puree (tomato paste).?Saut??this until the mixture is dry and exudes oil. Cook for a?further 10-15 minutes until the mixture starts to brown.?

Add in the rest of the ingredients except for the cheese. Bring to a boil and simmer on low heat for half an hour. Add in the cheese and simmer again for another half an hour. By this time the sauce will be thick and rich with a film of oil on top. Skim this off if there is too much. I used lean meat so there is less ?fat. Add the salt. Do not put too much salt as the cheese topping will still add to its saltiness.

To serve:

spaghetti (100 gms. dry pasta per person)
grated cheddar, parmesan or queso de bola
bread (garlic bread, garlic dough balls or buttered bread slices)

Cook the spaghetti to your preference. The pasta for Filipino spaghetti is cooked well, more tender than Italian pasta.

Stir some sauce into the freshly cooked pasta. Transfer to a serving dish and top with more sauce. Sprinkle with cheese and serve with bread on the side.

Astronomers uncover a surprising trend in galaxy evolution

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? A comprehensive study of hundreds of galaxies observed by the Keck telescopes in Hawaii and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has revealed an unexpected pattern of change that extends back 8 billion years, or more than half the age of the universe.

"Astronomers thought disk galaxies in the nearby universe had settled into their present form by about 8 billion years ago, with little additional development since," said Susan Kassin, an astronomer at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and the study's lead researcher. "The trend we've observed instead shows the opposite, that galaxies were steadily changing over this time period."

Today, star-forming galaxies take the form of orderly disk-shaped systems, such as the Andromeda Galaxy or the Milky Way, where rotation dominates over other internal motions. The most distant blue galaxies in the study tend to be very different, exhibiting disorganized motions in multiple directions. There is a steady shift toward greater organization to the present time as the disorganized motions dissipate and rotation speeds increase. These galaxies are gradually settling into well-behaved disks.

Blue galaxies -- their color indicates stars are forming within them -- show less disorganized motions and ever-faster rotation speeds the closer they are observed to the present. This trend holds true for galaxies of all masses, but the most massive systems always show the highest level of organization.

Researchers say the distant blue galaxies they studied are gradually transforming into rotating disk galaxies like our own Milky Way.

"Previous studies removed galaxies that did not look like the well-ordered rotating disks now common in the universe today," said co-author Benjamin Weiner, an astronomer at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "By neglecting them, these studies examined only those rare galaxies in the distant universe that are well-behaved and concluded that galaxies didn't change."

Rather than limit their sample to certain galaxy types, the researchers instead looked at all galaxies with emission lines bright enough to be used for determining internal motions. Emission lines are the discrete wavelengths of radiation characteristically emitted by the gas within a galaxy. They are revealed when a galaxy's light is separated into its component colors. These emission lines also carry information about the galaxy's internal motions and distance.

The team studied a sample of 544 blue galaxies from the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe 2 (DEEP2) Redshift Survey, a project that employs Hubble and the twin 10-meter telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. Located between 2 billion and 8 billion light-years away, the galaxies have stellar masses ranging from about 0.3 percent to 100 percent of the mass of our home galaxy.

A paper describing these findings will be published Oct. 20 in The Astrophysical Journal.

The Milky Way galaxy must have gone through the same rough-and-tumble evolution as the galaxies in the DEEP2 sample, and gradually settled into its present state as the sun and solar system were being formed.

In the past 8 billion years, the number of mergers between galaxies large and small has decreased sharply. So has the overall rate of star formation and disruptions of supernova explosions associated with star formation. Scientists speculate these factors may play a role in creating the evolutionary trend they observe.

Now that astronomers see this pattern, they can adjust computer simulations of galaxy evolution until these models are able to replicate the observed trend. This will guide scientists to the physical processes most responsible for it.

The DEEP2 survey is led by Lick Observatory at the University of California at Santa Cruz in collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., the University of Chicago and the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and the European Space Agency. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Md., conducts Hubble science operations. STScI is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. in Washington.
