China Biotech In Review: Medtronic Buys China Kanghui For $816 Million

Deals and Transactions

China Kanghui Holdings (NYSE: KH), the Changzhou medical device maker, announced it will be acquired Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) for $816 million or $30.75 per ADS (see story). The transaction increases Medtronic's presence in China for its large portfolio of medical devices, which includes everything from pacemakers and stents to spinal implants and surgical instruments. Founded in 1997, Kanghui staged its New York Stock Exchange IPO in August 2010 at a price of $10.25.

China Nuokang Bio-Pharma (NSDQ: NKBP) has accepted a go-private offer of $5.80 per ADS that values the company at $114 million (see story). The offer comes from Yuhuan Zhu, the wife of the company's chairman/CEO, along with Grand Enterprises Group Co., Ltd., which will own 55% of the company post-transaction. Grand Enterprise is a China investment company. Nuokang's Board has recommended that shareholders vote in favor of accepting the offer.

Medicago [MDCGF.PK], a Canadian vaccines company, has out-licensed China rights to its pandemic and seasonal flu vaccines to Philip Morris Products, the cigarette maker, in a $12 million deal (see story). PMP has owned a 40% stake in Medicago since 2008. In addition, Medicago signed an exclusive license for a portfolio of plant-based protein development technologies from PMP. The technology will allow Medicago to grow its vaccines on tobacco plants, a faster, less-expensive production method than currently used methods.

BGI, the genomics powerhouse headquartered in Shenzhen, will build a next generation sequencing facility in Singapore as part of a partnership with INEX Innovations Exchange, a Singapore-based women's health diagnostics company. BGI has developed a non-invasive test that uses a blood sample from a pregnant mother to screen for three chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. One of the abnormalities results in Down Syndrome. The test replaces an amniocentesis procedure, which has a 1% chance of causing a miscarriage.

Big Pharma in China

Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), the Danish drug company known for its diabetes focus, officially opened a new $100 million R&D center in Beijing's Zhongguancun Life Science Park, near the company's existing facility (see story). The new center will allow the company to increase R&D staffing in China from 130 to 200 in the immediate future. With the increased capacity, the center is now able to conduct the full range of protein research in China, according to Novo Nordisk.

Trials and Approvals

Neuralstem (NYSE: CUR) was granted SFDA approval to begin a clinical trial in China of its spinal cord stem cell product (see story). The product, NSI-566, will be used as a treatment for paralysis caused by ischemic stroke. Neuralstem is a US company; its China subsidiary, Suzhou Sun-Now Biopharmaceutical Co. Ltd., will carry out the trial at BaYi Brain Hospital in Beijing.

News and Analysis

To honor innovative drug development in China, the BayHelix Group and Elsevier Business Intelligence selected four companies and individuals for the 2012 BayHelix-Elsevier Awards, recognizing significant achievements in four different areas of pharmaceutical development. The winners were: Professor Ningshao Xia and his team at Xiamen University for the first Hepatitis E vaccine; the Hutchison MediPharma/Astra Zeneca cancer drug partnership; ZheJiang BetaPharma's launch of its cancer drug and its innovative pricing plan; and Steve Yang of Lilly (NYSE: LLY) for his international leadership.

Disclosure: none.

Can Florida?s Medicaid reform plan be the model for the nation?

Quietly, over the past six years, an experiment in providing healthcare for the poor has been playing out in Broward and four other counties around the state. Its basic goal is to relieve the financial pressures of Medicaid on Florida?s taxpayers by turning over poor and disabled patients to private companies, a move lawmakers believe will cut costs.

Conservatives love the Medicaid reform program, pointing to an in-depth University of Florida study indicating that the experiment has lowered costs while not raising consumer complaints. The Legislature has already approved a slightly modified model of the reform to go statewide. At least one national think tank believes it should be a model for the entire country.

Liberals decry the effort as a way to build corporate profits at the expense of the poor. Howard Mallinger, a Sunrise retiree, thinks they?re right. He has two adult sons with mental health problems who are in a Medicaid health maintenance organization. The HMO frequently won?t provide their medications, or is slow to approve them, causing their health issues to spiral out of control, Mallinger says.

One son has been involuntarily committed under Florida?s Baker Act 44 times in the past five years, he says. That often means expensive three-day hospital confinements. ?The joke is on the taxpayer,? Mallinger says.

With state taxpayers spending $21 billion a year on Medicaid and 3.2 million Floridians depending on it for their care, including 270,000 in Broward, the stakes are huge. The UF research shows the pilot has saved the state about $100?million a year, and Florida?s leaders are determined to take the HMO-style reform statewide as early as 2014.

But three serious problems with the pilot could threaten the plan?s statewide success:

??R. Paul Duncan, the professor who led the much-discussed UF study, says he has yet to answer one crucial question: Does the new system cost less because insurers are providing more efficient care or are they simply giving patients less care?

?That is a very big deal,? he says.

Though discussion of the pilot focuses almost entirely on for-profit HMOs, two of the biggest and most successful groups in the program are nonprofit provider service networks (PSNs) paid on the traditional fee-for-service basis that the state is trying to abolish.

??Many hospitals love the pilot, saying they?re satisfied with the payments they receive. But many doctors hate it, citing complaints from their patients and their own low reimbursement rates. The conservative Florida Medical Association, which represents the state?s doctors, adamantly opposes the statewide expansion.

??The presidential election is likely to play a role as well, since the federal government provides more than half the funding for Medicaid. The Republican platform favors letting states do what they want with Medicaid, while the Obama administration is likely to demand major changes before allowing the pilot to go statewide.

Taxpayers? problem

In the last 12 years, Florida?s Medicaid program has grown five times faster than general revenue. It now consumes 30 percent of the state?s budget and keeps growing.

?Medicaid has commandeered the state budget and crowds out our ability to fund other worthwhile priorities, such as our colleges and universities, public safety and transportation,? complains Sen. Joe Negron, R-Palm City.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) ? The city of Spokane has finally settled with a golfer who sprained an ankle in 2007 when he stepped through a sprinkler lid on the 12th hole at the Esmeralda Golf Course.

Stan L. Peterson is getting $215,000 plus free golf at Spokane city courses for as long as the 72-year-old lives.

The Spokesman-Review reports neither Peterson nor a city spokeswoman is commenting on the settlement that ended a five-year legal case.

The terms were in documents the city council reviewed earlier this week before approving the settlement.

CORRECTED-UPDATE 5-Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions, finance cost

Sun Sep 30, 2012 10:33am BST

(Corrects to note that Brussels has declined to comment on the draft budget)

* Spain details cuts to health, education

* Debt-to-GDP ratio to rise to 90.5 percent by end-2013

* Budget deficit rises to 7.4 percent including bank aid

* Gross debt issuance rises to 207.2 billion euros in 2013

By Andr?s Gonz?lez

MADRID, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Spain's debt levels are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for aid as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions, an ailing banking system and rising refinancing costs, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.7 billion) next year, largely by deepening already unpopular cuts in public sector wages, education, health and social services, fuelling anti-austerity protests.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns that the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have stoked doubts that Spain can fix its problems without help.

Thousands of protesters gathered on Saturday in Madrid's Neptune plaza, between the Prado Museum and Parliament, for a third time this week to vent anger at politicians they accuse of pillaging the welfare state to bail out badly-run banks.

"This has to change. We have to show them we are not an anti-system minority but represent Spain's discontent and we are many. You only have to see the unemployment rate to see that," said state school teacher, Montse, 44, who was at the march with her unemployed husband and 11-year-old daughter.

Unemployment in Spain is more than double the European Union average, with half of all working-age under-26s unable to find jobs and shattered businesses laying off employees they cannot afford to pay.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros, after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to near unsustainable levels of above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalisation loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said that Spain's detailed timetable for economic reforms goes beyond what the European Commission has asked of Spain and is an ambitious step forward, though it has declined to comment on the draft budget at this stage.

Many economists expressed doubt that Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised, as with every other budget over the past four years.

The budget is based on the assumption that GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year-on-year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed that Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

Shopping Malls Vs Online Shopping ? Which Is Better?

For many years, a shopping mall was the center of all shopping activity for many people. However, with technology came online shopping, which in many ways, revolutionized the way people shop and do business. Many businesses adopted this new trend by setting up online stores to complement their physical stores. Currently, the decision to visit the local mall or shop online is a matter of personal preference, and the reasons for preferring one mode of shopping to the other vary, depending on who you ask. Below is a brief comparison of these two concepts.

The Similarity between the Shopping mall and an Online Store

The one thing these venues and online stores have in common is the wide variety of products and services that you can find in one place. The concept behind malls is to have an all-under-one roof design, whereby different vendors, retailers, service providers and other businesses can offer their products and services. Therefore, shoppers don?t have to move from one location to another, trying to find a particular brand or business.

Some of the common facilities that you can find in one of these venues include grocery stores, fast food outlets, cinema halls, supermarkets, banks, gaming arcades, electronic stores, and many more. The same concept applies to online shopping, though in a virtual state. Online shopping allows you to conveniently shop from multiple stores, simultaneously. However, online shopping has a slight advantage in that the range of products and services offered are limitless, whereas the shopping mall has to deal with space constraints.

The Advantages of Shopping Malls over Online Stores

Buying your stuff from the shopping mall is ideal, especially when it comes to buying personal effects such as clothing and jewelry. Some items require you to first, try them on, before you can buy. Buying clothes, underwear, jewelry and other personal effects, online, poses various challenges. First, it may not be possible to tell the exact color, size, and texture, among other attributes. When it comes to other items such as watches and jewelry, it may be impossible to verify the authenticity. Even though these attributes may be indicated, and some images of the items posted online, it is only through visiting the shopping mall that you can try out an item, verify the authenticity, and be satisfied before buying.

With the wide range of facilities that are physically available in these malls, you can take your family along to have a treat. You may choose to do an all-inclusive family shopping, grab something to eat in the restaurants, take your children to the video game arcades, watch a movie, visit the beauty salon, pay some bills, among other activities. With online stores, you can just shop.

The Advantages of Online Stores over Shopping Malls

Many people have busy schedules, hence finding the time to go to the mall, whether alone or with their families is impossible. You need considerable energy and time to go shopping. Apart from this, getting stuck up in traffic, having to wade through crowds of people, or having to deal with the hustle and bustle of children running around in the shopping mall is not the ideal shopping experience that some people would like. For this reason, they would rather stay at home and shop online, since it is more convenient. The comfort of your home or office, as well as the considerable time-saving is appealing to many shoppers.

In summary, both concepts seem to have their share of advantages and disadvantages. As such, the decision to shop either online or visit the shopping mall lies with individual circumstances, as well as preference.

Have you ever wondered whether you should go to the shopping mall, or you would rather stay at home and shop online? This article looks at these two shopping methods to help answer your questions.

Correspondent for Iranian TV killed by sniper in Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - A correspondent for Iran's English-language Press TV was shot dead in Syria and its Damascus bureau chief was wounded, Press TV reported on Wednesday, in an attack the channel blamed on regional powers that support Syrian rebel forces.

"Insurgents in the Syrian capital Damascus have attacked Press TV staff and killed one of our reporters," anchor Bardia Honardar said on air.

Maya Naser, 33, Press TV's correspondent in Damascus, died after being shot in the neck by a sniper, and Damascus bureau chief Hussein Murtada received a gunshot wound to the back, Press TV said. The two journalists were covering twin bombings on Wednesday that targeted one of Syria's military command buildings in the capital.

Iran has supported Assad, its sole Arab ally, as he attempts to suppress the uprising, and accuses Western and regional powers of arming rebels with the intent of toppling President Bashar al-Assad.

"We hold Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who provide militants (with) weapons to kill civilians, military personnel and journalists, responsible for the killing of Maya," Press TV's news director Hamid Reza Emadi said on air from Tehran.

"Press TV will be pursuing the matter of the murder of Maya and will not let those who killed our correspondent feel like they can kill media people and get away with it."

Murtada, who is also bureau chief for Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam, was injured earlier this month while travelling with Syrian government forces when armed men ambushed them, Al-Alam reported.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent organization dedicated to the defense of press freedom, says that more than 20 foreign and Syrian journalists have been killed in Syria since the revolt against Assad began in March 2011.

Rangers rally past A's 5-4 for 5-game AL West lead

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Adrian Beltre singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past Oakland 5-4 on Monday night to stretch their AL West lead over the Athletics to five games with nine to play.

Beltre, whose 35th homer tied the score in the seventh, grounded a sharp single through the middle of the infield off Tyson Ross (2-11) in the ninth, bringing home pinch-runner Craig Gentry to end the opener of a four-game series.

The Rangers got the inning started with consecutive singles by Mitch Moreland and Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus' sacrifice bunt. Josh Hamilton, who had already hit his major league-best 43rd homer after missing the previous five games with a cornea issue, was intentionally walked to load the bases for Beltre.

Joe Nathan (3-4), the sixth Rangers pitcher, struck out two in the ninth. That included a strikeout of Seth Smith as Stephen Drew was caught stealing to end the inning.

It was the first of seven meetings in the last 10 days of the regular season between the two-time defending American League champion Rangers and A's, who have lost six of seven after winning 17 of their previous 21 games.

Oakland has a two-game lead over the idle Los Angeles Angels for the second AL wild card.

Beltre hit a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh to tie the game at 4, a shot that came with Hamilton on base.

A's rookie right-hander Dan Straily struck out eight and left with a 4-2 lead after 6 2-3 innings with Hamilton due to bat and the bases empty.

Dean Blevins walked Hamilton, the only batter he faced, before Pat Neshek gave up the two-run drive to Beltre.

It was Neshek who allowed Raul Ibanez's tying, two-run homer to cap a four-run 13th inning Saturday by the AL East-leading New York Yankees, who then won on a two-out error in the 14th ? a game that Ross also lost.

Hamilton hit a 441-foot solo homer in the fifth that landed in the second deck of seats high above the Rangers' bullpen in right-center to get Texas within 3-2.

Josh Donaldson and Yoenis Cespedes homered for Oakland, and Cliff Pennington had an RBI single in the sixth.

Donaldson lined a two-run shot deep into the left-field seats in the second off Derek Holland. Cespedes hit a two-out solo homer, his 21st, for a 3-1 lead an inning later.

Holland pitched only three innings, his shortest outing since May 30 when the left-hander gave up eight runs over 1 2-3 innings in the Rangers' 21-8 home loss to Seattle.

The Rangers got an unearned run in the second when Michael Young was hit by a pitch before Donaldson's error at third base. Young scored on Moreland's bloop single that ended a string of 24 consecutive at-bats by the Rangers with runners in scoring position without a hit.

Hamilton's homer was followed by consecutive doubles by Beltre and Nelson Cruz that failed to produce a run. Beltre was picked off second after wandering too far off the base on a pitch in the dirt that catcher Derek Norris quickly recovered.

NOTES: CF Coco Crisp was out of the A's starting lineup for the sixth game in a row because of an infection in both eyes. Manager Bob Melvin said Crisp has seen three doctors but his condition hasn't improved much. ... Holland is 6-0 in 10 September starts the past two seasons. ... After giving up three consecutive extra-base hits in the fifth, Straily retired the last six batters he faced.

Over Bath Shower Screens Provide A Spacious Look And Feel To The

Over bath shower screens not only provide protection against the water splashes that may cover the entire bathroom, but also add a style quotient to the area. Due to their convenience and versatility, these shower screens are considered a great alternative to traditional shower curtains. Basically, there are two designs of overbath shower screens, including frameless types that use 10mm toughened glass screen without a frame around the edges, and semi-frameless screens that use 6mm toughened glass and have a framed parameter. Glass shower screens can be easily installed around the bathtub or around the shower. In order to meet space related constraints, there are even square, rectangle and diamond shaped glass shower screens available in both frameless and semi-frameless designs.

Benefits of glass shower screens

Glass over bath shower screens are easy to clean and maintain. They are more hygienic than plastic curtains as mold and mildew will not form on the glass. The surface of these screens is 100 percent free of germs as it is non-porous. Moreover, these screens are durable and very difficult to break. Even when broken, the glass will break into smaller pieces for safety reasons. The biggest benefit of glass shower screens is that they can go with any type of interior decor.

Categories in over bath shower screens

There are different categories of over bath shower screens, such as single panel screens, sliding doors, pivot door, and folding screens. The single panel screens have no door, just a panel of glass attached in place. The sliding door screens, as the name suggests come with glass panels that can slide along the length of bathtub or shower, allowing the person to enter or exit the shower. These types of screens are commonly used in bathrooms with limited space as they don?t block any portion of bathroom whilst they are open. In pivot door screens, the glass panels are fixed in place, except for door that is on pivot hinge and pivots outwards or inwards when opened.

The Good Home with Maxwell: The Basic Shower Curtain Apartment ...

Hmm... the title is a bit misleading... "select" might had been a better descriptor than "make"

I don't get how this is about making a shower curtain? Everything in it was purchased.

Am I the only that thinks paying $100 for a cotton shower curtain is overkill?

I'd only pay about $15-20 for a shower curtain; probably at Ross or TXMaxx or Marshalls. I agree with him that a white or partly clear shower curtain is nice in a small bathroom where you want to let light in.

Does your shower curtain rod have a bump where the 2 sides come together or is it rough? Do your rings not slide very well? Home Improvement stores sell a curled plastic tube for about $3 that you can use to wrap a straight shower rod so your rings will slide smoothly. It's long & you can cut it to the proper length with regular scissors.

Rats, I thought he was gonna talk about how he sewed a shower curtain for the bathtub in the kitchen. (My sister used to live in a place like that but hers didn't have a shower. Maybe his didn't either but he kinda made it sound like that's what this was gonna be about.)

Also, yeah, "you don't have to spend a lot" on the fabric curtain but then he says he likes the $100 ones from whateverhesaid? Um, ok.

Jenncharina, no, you are definitely not the only one. I wouldn't pay upwards of $25 for a shower curtain.
And in fact, I do like the hotel type shower curtains that are a combo of a curtain and a liner, so I don't to use a liner. The last one lasted me about 6 years, then it was no longer quite waterproof and it was time to replace it. So I did - I bound a decent replica at Bed Bath and Beyond (or what's it's called), it was $25 and I had a coupon for 20% off.

I just use a cheap (less than $10) cotton shower curtain with no liner, and I wash it weekly. As for the bump on the rod, I use rings with rollers; they do work much better than the plastic ones.

Well, the curtain hooks are nice.

Eating in the bathtub kinda grosses me out.

Disappointing...

Meh, whatever.

ouch... not such good reviews in the bathroom.. Sorry chaps...

You're absolutely right that it's not "making" in the sense of the word you'd normally think.. I overlooked that and we can change it.

As for the price point, you're absolutely right that that is a lot to spend on a shower curtain, AND you can certainly get a nice cotton curtain for far less, BUT if you could get really close and actually see this Matouk shower curtain, you'd see that it was really special and nice and worth it as you'll keep it for years. I certainly didn't start with buying this one - it was a splurge - but I've been converted. :)

Cheer up, Maxwell. It's not even a fraction as horrible as the jeans-in-the-freezer post, lol. But really? "You don't have to spend a lot of money.....just about $100." I could overlook the use of the term 'make' but this comment is over the top. (I am at Apartment Therapy, am I not?) And why no mention of the curved shower rod? Still not inexpensive in the big scheme of things (at least by my definition) but I found one @ 50% off + used a 20% off coupon. Definitely a luxury in a small space which nets a large impact..

Oh, and my hotel quality white shower curtain/liner which is soft, supple & allows lets the light through. is going on six yrs old & showing no signs of wear. Got it on clearance as well with another 20% off coupon at roughly a fourth of what you're suggesting. It CAN be done.

Hmm, maybe a more apt description would be "how to set up your shower curtain" or something. :-) I bought those exact shower curtain hooks on at your suggestion, Maxwell, and I love them to death...well, as much as one can love 12 super-functional metal hooks. Thanks!

Hey Maxwell, Any sources for oil rubbed bronze shower curtain hooks with ball bearings that are as nice as the ones you recommend? I can only find the sort of standard lightbulb shaped ones.

I agree that 100 dollars may be too much to pay for a standard cotton white shower curtain, BUT I appreciate the advice from someone who has thought about it a lot over time and come to the conclusion that good basics often work best. I think the negative comments are a result of people's expectations being set that this was a post about DIY'ing your own curtain.

Art sleuths can't crack this 'Da Vinci Code'

From March 2012: Art experts find clues that suggest "The Battle of Anghiari," a long-lost masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, lies underneath a fresco in Florence.

By Alan Boyle

The controversial effort to find out whether a long-lost Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece lies beneath a fresco in Florence has been suspended without resolving a mystery that some have compared to a "Da Vinci Code" riddle.

The mystery surrounds a painting known as "The Battle of Anghiari," or "Fight for the Standard," which was commissioned by city officials for a meeting hall in the Palazzo Vecchio to commemorate a Florentine military victory in 1440. Contemporary accounts indicate that Leonardo began the wall painting in 1505 ? but left it unfinished, due to problems he encountered with the experimental technique he was using to apply the paint.

Decades later, the city hall was enlarged and restructured, and in 1563 the Italian artist Giorgio Vasari painted a mural on one of the new walls. In the course of all that remodeling, Leonardo's painting disappeared. Today, it's known only from Leonardo's preparatory sketches and from copies inspired by the original.

Fast-forward to 1975: Maurizio Seracini, an Italian-born engineering professor and expert in art analysis at the University of California at San Diego, was back in his native Florence, studying Vasari's fresco. He noticed that a soldier in the fresco was waving a flag that read "Cerca Trova" (Seek and Ye Shall Find). Did this hint at the location of the lost Leonardo painting?

Over the years that followed, Seracini marshaled the expertise, technology and financial support needed to create a virtual reconstruction of the hall's layout before the remodeling took place. It looked as if there was a gap between the part of the wall where the "Cerca Trova" legend was painted and the older wall beneath. Armed with that information ? plus funding from the National Geographic Society and backing from Florence's mayor, Matteo Renzi ? Seracini won permission from Italian officials to drill six tiny holes into Vasari's wall and push camera-equipped endoscopic probes into the gap behind it.

The initial results were promising: Seracini said the team found "traces of pigments that appear to be those known to have been used exclusively by Leonardo." This March, National Geographic aired a documentary about the investigation, titled "Finding the Lost da Vinci."?Heartened by the findings, Seracini?asked for permission to conduct more sophisticated tests. The story was shaping up as a real-life "Da Vinci Code" thriller in the art world. (In fact, Seracini is mentioned in the Dan Brown novel as an art diagnostician who unveils "the unsettling truth" about a different work by Leonardo.)

Italian officials, however, were becoming increasingly unsettled about tampering with the 450-year-old Vasari mural. Some experts questioned whether there was really enough justification to go forward. "Vasari would never have covered a work by an artist he admired so much in the hope that one day someone would search and find it," Discovery News quoted Tomaso Montanari, an art historian at the University Federico II in Naples, as saying. "You would expect such a hypothesis from Dan Brown, certainly not from art historians."

In the end, cultural officials ruled that the scientists could drill one more hole for endoscopic tests, but couldn't do any further drilling after that. That meant the more sophisticated (and more intrusive) tests could not be conducted. Last month, Italian news outlets reported that the National Geographic Society was suspending the project "until further notice."?

Now Discovery News says that Florentine museum officials have given the go-ahead to fill in the six existing holes and take down the scaffolding that was used during the project. "This is how it ends," the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported, "with strokes of stucco and paint, the search for Leonardo's mythical work."

Getting The Most From Your Next Home Improvement Project ...

There are a variety of reasons why home improvements are undertaken. Some people get bored with the look of their house. Other people do it because they want to increase their property value. But many people embark on home improvement projects because they enjoy the satisfaction of doing things themselves. Whatever your reason is to improve a home, here is some advice to get you started.

Installing captivating hand railings will improve your home?s look and increase safety. You can install them in your entry way, on sidewalks or on your deck. Railings can especially help older individuals and children. You can build or buy railings in a variety of materials, including copper, steel, wrought iron, cables, wood and even glass. There is no reason not to install hand railings in your home because they can improve country and style.

Never undertake a new home improvement project without first ascertaining the expected costs of all fag and materials. Many homeowners grossly underestimate the money involved in improvements and this mistake can be very costly. Get a number of estimates and be certain to plan for complications.

Organizing your kitchen cabinets can help create a more efficient workspace for you in the kitchen. Remove any items that are out-dated or no longer used often like expired canned goods and old spices. Wipe down the shelving, then lay down fresh lining paper. You can then group together things when you place your items back in. You will no longer have a hard time finding anything, since what you need is always right there.

There is a fun home improvement project that the whole family can do. Planting a garden somewhere in your front yard has been shown to increase the value of a home. What?s more, it won?t cause serious problems if done incorrectly.

Consider using bamboo when putting down new hardwood floor. Bamboo floors are durable and are quite popular. Since it?s durable, it can withstand things dropping on it without much damage. It is very strong, which makes it suitable for areas with high traffic. It also stands up to humidity and moisture well, making it saint for a kitchen or bathroom.

In many cases, just a small project can make a large different to a home?s value. When you are considering selling your home, think about the small things that you can easily do to improve it. For example, give your house, inside and out, a fresh coat of paint. This will only cost you about two hundred dollars, but can increase your home?s value significantly.

Roller and aluminum shutters are good options for home value and property security. Adding aluminum or rolling shutters can be a very wise investment if you live in a hurricane prone area or if you need to leave your home unattended for long periods.

Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. We might all start with different intentions and reasons, but ultimately, we all have some motivating factor. Regardless of whether it?s for appearance or extra money, home improvement can benefit anybody.

Tax farming, Chinese style

Apparently there is at least one city in China where people routinely litter, spit in public and break traffic laws (oh Shaoyang, you know I'm talking about you). This particular city was also short of employees and cash to fight the problems.

Their solution? Hire 1000 senior citizens to patrol the streets and LET THEM KEEP 80% of the ticket revenue they generate?

Can anyone guess what happened?

Yep, those lucky seniors wrote a mountain of tickets.

Can anyone guess who's mad?

Yep, the scofflaws.

I love this quote:

?Many of us depend on motorcycles to get around, but they?re now giving us tickets for not wearing a helmet, for not having insurance, or for not carrying our licenses,? complained the clerk, who would give only her surname, Li. ?None of us dare drive our motorcycles anymore ? it?s just too risky.?

Apparently, complying with the laws is just totally out of the question?

The only thing the city did wrong here was that they are paying the seniors $70 some dollars a month. They should have auctioned off the positions, making people pay up front for the right to write tickets and keep 80% of the revenue.

Labels: don't do the crime if you can't do the time, is our seniors earning? revenue enhancement

Miller's TD helps No. 16 Buckeyes beat UAB 29-15

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Despite its imperfect play, Ohio State is still unbeaten on the season.

Braxton Miller ran for two touchdowns and No. 16 Ohio State overcame a lethargic, mistake-filled and enigmatic effort to hold off UAB 29-15 on Saturday.

Coach Urban Meyer narrowed the problems to "offense, defense and special teams," expressed his disappointment and said his players have to get dramatically better before opening Big Ten play at No. 21 Michigan State on Saturday.

He also reminded fans in so many words that he is no miracle-worker and that it was only a year ago that the Buckeyes were 6-7.

"You've got to think about where this team was, now. This is not a finely tuned machine right now, it hasn't been for a while," he said. "Obviously, there's some growing pains and it's not as easy. I thought we'd be further ahead."

UAB (0-3) more than held its own against the Buckeyes (4-0), who committed drive-killing penalties, had a punt blocked for a touchdown and had trouble scoring against a defense that gave up 44 points and 477 yards in its first two games.

"We're not playing to our potential," wide receiver Corey Brown said. "Especially after a wakeup call like that, we've got to come out (this week) and practice hard."

There was plenty of blame to go around.

"We weren't as aggressive as last week," Ohio State defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins said. "I feel like some guys have got to know their place, their schemes, when they're out there."

The Blazers scored on special teams and started the second half by recovering an onside kick, but were undone by four chop-block penalties and a giveaway that led to a score.

"Moral victories are OK, but we really wanted to come back with a W," Blazers running back Darrin Reaves said.

Miller completed passes for 12, 14 and 18 yards and ran for 26 yards to set up his clinching 1-yard TD run with 5:03 left.

It was yet another curious performance by the Buckeyes. They have struggled in all four of their nonconference home games, having to come from behind last week before beating California 35-28 on a late defensive gaffe.

Miller completed 12 of 20 passes for 143 yards and rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries. Jordan Hall gained 105 yards on 17 carries.

Ohio State was a 37-point favorite against UAB, which had lost at home to in-state rival Troy 39-29 in its opener and then been pounded 49-6 by No. 8 South Carolina a week ago.

Yet UAB outgained the Buckeyes, 403-347 and had more first downs 22-20.

"We seem like a very passive team," Meyer said. "They didn't score a touchdown on our defense but we give up a lot of yardage. That hurts. I sit there and I'm pained watching it. On offense our explosiveness is obviously nonexistent for much of the game. If it was one thing we could make adjustments and fix it, it's more than one thing right now."

UAB's Austin Brown completed 21 of 35 passes for 196 yards with one interception, while Jonathan Perry hit on 7 of 11 passes for 63 yards before leaving after a quarter.

The Blazers, down by nine points at the half, showed some moxie against a ranked opponent by kicking onside and recovering the ball easily.

Ty Long made his third field goal of the afternoon for UAB to cut the gap to 21-15 early in the fourth quarter.

After floundering for the entire half, the Buckeyes finally got untracked to put the game out of reach, going on a 71-yard drive that ended with Miller picking his spot and bulling in off left tackle on a 1-yard carry.

Miller then raced around the left end for the 2-point conversion and the final 14-point margin.

Doran Grant's interception ended the next UAB possession and the Blazers' hopes.

UAB quickly grabbed a 9-0 lead, quieting a crowd of 105,019.

Meyer, who has taken over coaching Ohio State's special teams, was particularly miffed after the Blazers broke through easily and blocked a punt before it got to the toe of Ben Buchanan.

Linebacker Jesse Parrish was credited with the block, with receiver Nick Adams scooping up the loose ball and running 20 yards for the touchdown.

"We told our kids that we were going after the first one, that we were sending everybody and we would score a touchdown," he said. "It happened just as planned."

After Long's 47-yard field goal pushed the lead to nine points, the Buckeyes went 75 yards to score on a 1-yard plunge by Rod Smith. But the Blazers came right back to make it 12-7 in the half when Long converted a 54-yard field goal ? the longest in UAB history and the third-longest by an Ohio State opponent at Ohio Stadium.

From there, however, everything unraveled for the Blazers. It took just 2:42 for the Buckeyes to grab a 21-12 lead.

Miller completed four straight passes and then covered the last 12 yards himself ? pirouetting to leave linebacker Greg Irvin grasping at air at the 7 ? to give Ohio State its first lead of the day.

Two snaps later, Brown tossed a quick pass in the right flat to tight end Kennard Backman, who was upended by Christian Bryant and Grant ? Backman leaving the ball on the ground where Grant fell on it.

Three plays after that, Zach Boren scored from the 2.

Meyer will have a busy week.

"I have a very clear understanding of where we're at," he said. "I'm disappointed, but that doesn't mean I don't love the guys. I think they're working their tails off. We've just got to keep grinding."

10 Ways Ironman Triathletes Can Avoid Chronic Cardio ... - Robb Wolf

?

Written by Ben Greenfield

At the recent Ancestral Health Symposium, Dr. James O?Keefe, a cardiologist from the Mid America Heart Institute at St. Luke?s Hospital reported on findings that exercise can be harmful, especially when performed as chronic cardio training and racing for extreme endurance events such as Ironman triathlon.

O?Keefe reviewed studies of physically active people, including those who trained for and raced in endurance events, such as marathons, triathlons, ultramarathons or long cycling events. The people who exercised regularly experienced significant benefits, including the ability to live seven years longer than those who were not physically active.

Why This Stuff Is Important

But when the data of extreme endurance athletes was isolated, it was found that the health effects of regular physical activity became less pronounced, and were instead replaced by significant risk of heart damage.

Specifically, completion of an event such as an Ironman triathlon (or even a relatively shorter marathon) was shown to cause structural heart changes and elevations of cardiac inflammatory biomarkers. Although most of these health issues return to normal within one week, an individual who is frequently competing in such events (as most triathletes and runners do) can experience months and years of repetitive cardiac injury, and this can lead to development of atrial fibrosis, myocardial scarring, interventricular septum, and increased susceptibility to atrial and ventricular arrhythmias.

For example, earlier this year, distance-running legend Micah True- better known for his role as Caballo Blanco in the book ?Born To Run? ? died while on a trail run from cardiomyopathy due to an enlarged heart. True was just one example of seasoned endurance athletes who have experienced sudden cardiac events during exercise. Marathoner Ryan Shay and Ironman triathlete Steve Larsen are others, and most recently professional Ironman triathlete Torbjorn Sindalle was forced into unexpected retirement due to premature wearing of his bicuspid valve.

Based on the data from O? Keefe, it appears that the cardiac remodeling induced by excessive exercise can lead to rhythm abnormalities, and in extreme endurance sports, this has been associated with as much as a 5-fold increase in the prevalence of serious heart problems ? especially when the cardiac damage is repeated year-after-year as a habitual occurrence.

For those of us wanting to be around to see our grandkids, this is important information to consider.

How Much Do Ironman Triathletes Normally Train?

Don?t get me wrong ? this article isn?t meant to scare you from endurance exercise altogether. As a multiple Ironman triathlon and marathon finisher, I?ll be among the first to acknowledge that in order to ?climb your personal Mt. Everest?, build self-esteem or self-realization through completing a grueling event, or achieving your dream of crossing the Ironman finish line, you may need to exercise slightly more than Dr. O?Keefe?s recommendation of 30-60 minutes per day (after which it is suggested that you may reach a point of diminishing health returns).

But most Ironman triathletes overdo exercise, big time. Based on the research at Ironman.com:

?Triathletes train an average of seven months for the Ford Ironman World Championship. The average hours per week devoted to training for the World Championship generally fall between 18 and 22. Average training distances for the three events are: Miles per week swimming: 7 (11.3 km), miles per week biking: 232 (373.3 km), miles per week running: 48 (77.2 km).?

That?s right: the majority of Ironman triathletes training for Kona are averaging close to 3 hours per day, and as an Ironman coach and competitor, I can tell you that the training programs of other Ironman triathletes aren?t far behind ? and professional triathletes train up to 4-6 hours per day with chronic cardio!

What this all means is that an Ironman triathlete falls quite perfectly into Dr. O? Keefe?s category of high potential for cardiac abnormalities.

Exceptions To The Rule

But there are exceptions to the rule.

Take Sami Inkinen for instance.

Sami is just coming off an amateur Ironman winning time of 8:24 at Ironman Sweden a couple weeks ago, and last year, his finishes included:

  • Overall amateur champion at Wildflower Triathlon Long Course
  • Overall amateur champion at Hawaii 70.3. Ironman
  • Age group world champion at Ironman 70.3. distance in Las Vegas
  • Age group world champion runner up at Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, with an 8:58:59 Kona performance

Here?s the kicker: despite kicking the butts of the 20-30 hour per week athletes, and beating many of the professional Ironman triathletes, Sami trains a maximum of about 12 hours per week using many of the methods you?re about to learn in this article.

At that same Ironman Hawaii last year, I was about a half hour behind Sami, completing the race in 9:36 ? but on a training schedule of strictly 10 hours per week (which I detailed in a LAVA magazine article entitled ?Unconventional Triathlon Training?).

So what kind of Ironman triathlon training strategies are guys like Sami and I doing to avoid (or at least mitigate) the heart damaging effects of chronic cardio, overtraining, and extreme hours spent performing endurance exercise? Here are 10?

10 Minimalist Ironman Training Strategies

1. Do Short Swims

Swimming requires much more efficiency, economy, and ?feel for the water? than it requires pure fitness (which is why a 12 year old girl can easily beat me in a 100 meter pool sprint). For this reason, frequency and consistency in swimming is more important than marathon-esque swim workouts of 60-90 minutes, such as a typical Master?s swim class.

So for your Ironman swim training, you only need to swim ?long? once per week, and that swim shouldn?t be longer than 60 minutes. Rather than a steady, slow swim, you should structure this workout to include hard, race pace intervals with short rests. Then pepper other brief 15-30 minute swims, such as 20?50 or 10?100 throughout the week, preferably before a strength training session, swim or bike so that you minimize? prep time.

2. Mostly Bike Indoors

Cycling can involve dressing, prepping tires, getting gloves or toe warmers, filling water bottles, meeting with a group and other activities that can take 15-20 minutes before you?re even on the road training. And once you?re finally out there, traffic lights and stop signs can significantly detract from the efficacy of your workout.

So if you want to maximize your cycling bang for your buck, find a room in the house to be your ?pain cave?, set up an indoor trainer, and do 1-2 short, intense indoor bike trainer sessions per week. You?ll stay focused and structured with this approach. For these, I like indoor workouts like 40-60 minute Sufferfest, Spinervals or Computrainer sessions.

4. No Early Season Long Bikes

With a minimalist approach, you only need to ride long (or ride outdoors) a maximum of once per week. This one ride can take anywhere from 2-5 hours, depending on how close you are to your race. In contrast to their peers, who are disappearing into the basement during the winter to do 3 hour indoor trainer sessions, and heading outside on 4-5 hour bike rides several months before the actual Ironman, most of my athletes do just two or three such long rides, and only in the final 8 weeks before Ironman.

5. Bike Alone

For both your indoor training session and your outdoor rides, you should try to ride alone as much as possible, and here?s why: group rides not only require lots of time investment to get a group together and head out for the session, but these rides also include lots of drafting, socializing and pace fluctuations ? all of which won?t be happening during your actual Ironman. So ride solo and avoid groups during your cycling workouts and you?ll get much more bang for your training buck.

6. No Long Runs

You heard me right. No long runs. While a long bike ride is a session from which you can recover relatively quickly, a long run (2+ hours) can significantly impact your joints and literally keep you inflamed and beat up for up to 2 weeks.

In the same way that anaerobic high intensity interval sessions have been shown to significantly enhance aerobic fitness, short and intense runs of 80-90 minutes are all you really need to get you ready for the Ironman marathon ? and some of my best Ironman performance has come from running only once per week for 90 minutes (with elliptical training, basketball or tennis for the other ?run? sessions). The trick is that you need to make these 80-90 minute runs high-quality, not long slow death marches like most Ironman athletes treat their long run. Do this session on fresh legs, after a good day?s rest, and you?ll maximize the intensity and efficiency of your one key run training session.

7. Run On Short Courses

If you do opt to run more than once per week, you should stay away from long courses, like 3+ mile loops or lengthy trails, because the longer the course, the more likely it is that you?ll take your time and run it slow. Instead, choose to run on tracks, neighborhood blocks, or short loops, which are far more conducive to brief, high-quality and intense intervals.

For example, if I am running more than once per week, one of my key Ironman training sessions is 12x200m repeats ? literally in the cul-de-sac outside my house. Including full recovery between repeats, this workout takes a maximum of 30 minutes, but if it?s performed at maximum intensity, you?ll feel as though you?ve run 2 hours by the time you finish.

8. Lift

Multiple research studies have shown that strength training can improve endurance performance by increasing neuromuscular recruitment, efficiency and economy ? especially for cyclists and runners. Anecdotal evidence, particularly from many older endurance athletes, suggest that strength training also plays a significant role in injury prevention.

Compared to short distance triathletes, you?ll notice that the best Ironman triathletes tend to be slightly ?beefier? (just do a Google image search for Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander and compare it to Olympic distance World Champion Alistair Brownlee). This added strength and muscle, which you can realistically achieve with 1-2 full body weight training sessions each week, can significantly enhance joint stability, cushioning, and impact during the relatively long and rigorous Ironman event.

9. Recover

If you can do your high intensity interval training sessions and key run workouts on fresh legs, you?re going to get way more bang for your training buck, and this is where recovery logging software can come in handy.

To track my recovery and nail my workouts when I?m most recovered, I personally use A) Restwise software, which tracks resting heart rate, body mass, sleep, oxygen saturation, hydration, appetite, muscle soreness, energy level, mood state, well being and previous day?s performance and B) heart rate variability tracking with a combination of HeartMath emWave2 and Azumio Stress Doctor app.

You?ll find that with minimalist training, you not only recover much more quickly, but you also require a minimal taper for Ironman. Rather than spending 3-5 weeks of ?healing? and tapering prior to a race, you can literally begin backing off just a week prior to Ironman.

10. Diet

You may find that you have more difficulty maintaining your racing weight when you aren?t training for an insane number of hours each day, especially if you?ve grown accustomed to eating anything you want, then training your ass off with chronic cardio to burn those calories.

The ?Carbohydrate Loading Conundrum? article does a fantastic job teaching you how to maximize glycogen stores while also increasing the body?s reliance on fat for energy. The strategies outlined in that article highlight the importance of choosing slow burning fuel for the majority of your energy needs. To fuel my minimalist training, I personally eat a high fat diet, and use a combination of coconut oil, high molecular weight starches and amino acid capsules during my actual training and racing, rather than the traditional gel and sports drink combo.

Wrapping It Up

Hopefully, these 10 tips give you a very good starting point for minimalist Ironman triathlon training, and help you to avoid chronic cardio self-destruction by training dozens of hours per week.

If you are already an Ironman triathlete, marathoner, or other extreme endurance exerciser who has been doing chronic cardio, I?d recommend you give your adrenal glands a break before jumping into the type of program described above.
