Gary Chartrand named chair of Florida Board of Education

Jacksonville businessman Gary Chartrand has been named chairman of the State Board of Education, according to the News Service of Florida.

Chartrand was originally appointed to the board in May 2011 by Gov. Rick Scott. He was voted chairman at the board's Friday meeting and will assume that post immediately.

He replaces Kathleen Shanahan.

The board also got an update on the search to replace former Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson.

Here's more from NSF:

A search firm told State Board of Education members Friday it has been in contact with approximately 20 potential candidates to replace Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson who stepped down earlier this year.

The search group faces a Sept. 27 deadline for applications. Ray and Associates, the company doing the search, will touch base with board members by Sept. 24 to determine if an adequate pool of serious candidates for the statewide post exists.

Search firm president Gary Ray told members that not all 20 candidates who may be interested in the position are likely to have the necessary qualifications to be considered. Ray said he expects many applications to come in close to the deadline to be as discreet as possible, given state public records laws.
